ZINEDINE ZIDANE AND REAL MADRID: CHAMPIONS LEAGUE NIGHTMARE
The best thing to happen to Real Madrid last season was the return of their icon and coach, Zinedine Zidane. After replacing Scolari in the madrid dug out, Real madrid fans were hoping for a smooth ride this season. Also considering the amount spent in the summer transfer window, you can say the fans are not wrong for expecting too much.
Real madrid were seemingly back to their best after back-t0-back wins in the league against Sevilla and Osasuna respectively, Zinedine Zidane’s side also earned a fair draw against Athletico madrid. Real Madrid stepped out infront of their fans hoping to put the defeat against PSG on matchday 1 behind them but then again they conceded 2 silly goals in the first half and the match become tougher than it should have been. Well, Club Brugge have to be given credit for their bold approach at the Santiago Bernabeau.
Madrid won three consecutive Champions League titles in Zidane’s previous tenure, before he resigned in 2018. Zidane returned to the Spanish club in March. Madrid has yet to win through two games at the 2019-2020 tournament.
“The result is bad, but the reaction is good,” Zinedine Zidane told reporters. “We cannot be happy with the first half because we produced a 45 minutes like never before. I am not happy with the point because we wanted three, but I did like the reaction.
“The two goals we conceded were laughable. We weren’t concentrating where the opponents are at their strongest. They scored the first goal, they went forward, and then scored the second. I insist we cannot be happy, but you always have to think about the positives.”
Madrid remain bottom of the group but while first place seems unlikely now, they will expect to get through. If, that is, they improve. There is “no margin for error now”, the club’s institutional director Emilio Butragueño admitted. “This can’t happen again,” Vinicius said. “We have to do more, and better,” Sergio Ramos insisted. “As simple as that.”
